The Polite Anti-Relena Essay by IWannaShout

First of all, I must admit in the beginning I didn't dislike Relena. She seemed like a nice kid even though she did tend to act kind of like a stuck up brat who didn't understand how good she had it. But then, her role grew much larger and filled too big of a gap in the show. Maybe you will disagree, but it would have been nice to focus the spotlight on others instead of Relena. The show would have been nicer after it took some of the focus and glitter concentrating around her growing up to maturity.

.

Another point: she also doesn't seem to have any friends or she doesn't want any. I don't like her for this reason as well. I think everyone needs to have friends and no one should ever turn away those who wish to make friendships with them. Relena was often just saying 'Oh, thank you. Outer space was nice. You're invited to my party.' This is going to sound corny, but I'm a pretty big fan of friends and friendship. That's why I like clumsy anime girls like Sailor Moon much better than Relena. Sailor Moon cares deeply about her friends and knows she can't succeed without their help. Relena constantly believes she's the only one out there to stop the war. Perhaps she is, perhaps she isn't; but she doesn't need to say it. It's unkind and very rude. Also, she doesn't seem to think of her adopted mother, who is still alive, or attempt to contact her in any way all the time she is Princess Relena. Or does she? I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Remember, I only go where the camera shows. I don't care if 'well, she probably did, but they just didn't show it'. Relena is fictional and what they want you to see is what she is.

.

Point three, she's got a crazy way of doing things. Well, at her party, she fled to go after Heero. Not a nice thing after her parents went through so much trouble to set it up for her and wish her love. She also rips apart her dress that her parents bought for her with love to make a little cloth Band-Aid thingy for Heero doesn't need it and also wants her dead, something her parents don't want for her despite how much she obviously desires it. I was in utter disbelief that she RAN away from her parents, BUGGED Heero once again when he's having his quiet time preparing to destroy something else, YELLED at Duo for basically saving her life, and GOES to pester Heero once again. Stop confusing that poor boy.

.

Fourth point: she doesn't seem to realize how good she has it, ever. She's got parents that love her, classmates who adore her, the world at her feet; and she still keeps going at Heero to kill her. She's always wanting more attention from her dad and then the world. Daddy needed to pay more attention to her up in space and now the world isn't listening to her ideals now either. Doesn't she know how good her situation is??? Doesn't she know of the less fortunate people out there??? Doesn't she realize that the world doesn't revolve around her??? I wonder why she doesn't try to be grateful with what she's got instead of always wanting more and fast.

.

My fifth point: she could have been closer with people. It would have made her much more attractive if she showed she CARED about her cause sometimes. If she's trying to save the entire world and everybody's life and be the hero of the millennium, then why can't she be closer to people and show that she does care about them? Relena seems very distant from the people, the common civilians. I've never seen her try to help anybody out personally. I've never seen her TRY to be around them unless she was attending school. You have to get personal with these things if you intend to help people out. I do not feel that it is right somehow that she just try to establish peace for people when she herself does not know them well. She doesn't seem very interested in the other Princesses and Ambassadors who visit her kingdom to learn of her ideals. She just wants to teach them. Teaching is nice, but it's so much better when you get closer. Maybe Relena did get close to Heero, but that's just one person. Sure, one is better than none. But Heero is not a average person who has more common and ground based ideals and views of the world as it is.

.

My last point: it would also have been nice for Relena to listen to other people's views a little before dismissing them as WRONG. Even if little girls want all of mankind to bow down to them. So she did listen to Mariamaie or whatever, but she still told the girl she was wrong. It'd be nicer to go for something like 'Oh, dear. Please, Mariamaie, you should demand that people to do such a thing for you. It would ruin them.' Something kind of corny maybe, but nicer defiantly. Ok, shock of hearing a 7-year old say that. She's forgiven, I'd have done the same too. But she should listen more to Dorothy's ideals or Romefeller's plans before going 'I strongly disagree' with her eyes all frowny and her hands on the table. Dorothy was actually pretty mature when dealing with Relena and her contrasting ideals. And we all know Dorothy can get a little childish and freaky about wars.

.

I'll admit that the story was more interesting with her in it because she kept getting in the way of Heero and she went off with this whole peace thing. It made the story much more interesting, but her character wasn't the nicest to place as a big world leader especially when she's supposed to be the 'good guy'. You know, Relena has got a lot of potential to be a not so bad character, but she acts like a spoiled child all the time who wants ever more attention focused on her personal life and her problems. The show just needed to get off the focus of her mind at times.
